Pashtuns live in southeastern Afghanistan and the northwestern province of Pakistan and are one of the largest ethnic groups in Afghanistan. Pashtuns are higher class which means their very wealthy and more powerful than Hazaras. In The Kite Runner, we see that the wealthy family are Pashtuns and their servants are Pashtuns. That shows that Pashtuns are above Hazaras. Pashtuns work at a variety of occupations in agriculture, trade, and business. But although Pashtuns are generally wealthy, working conditions are better for Pashtuns living in Pakistan than those in Afghanistan. Many Pashtun of Afghanistan are poor agricultural workers.
Not only are they different financially, but also in their physical appearance. Hazaras have a Chinese look to them while Pashtuns look more Caucasian.
The Hazaras Hazaras are considered lower class. Most Hazaras are shepherds, farmers or servants. They are followers of the Shi'a sect of Islam. Their bible is called the Qur'an or Koran and they believe Muhammad is a prophet of Islam. Hazaras only recognize the fourth caliph, Ali, who they believe is a direct descendent of prophet Muhammad. Hazaras speak different languages depending on where they are, they can speak any where from Farsi, Pashtu, Baluchi, and Turkic. Hazara ancestor back from north-western china in Xinjiang, or Mongolia (Afghanistan was once part of the Mongol Empire) giving them them Chinese features- flat nose, narrow eyes, and broad cheeks. Throughout history the Hazaras have been ridiculed, disrespect, shuned, and even murdered by the Pashtun; being as though Hazaras do not look or worship the way "Muslims should worship". They hide their beliefs and culture when vulnerable to someone who could hurt them. Being that the Hazaras are poor, and have very poor economic opportunities their living conditions are very bad. If you were a Hazara living in a cold climate you probably wouldn't survive. Hazara men wear turbans, vests, overcoats, and sweaters over their perahan-u-tunbans. The women wear light fabric clothing with bright colors and designs. Hazaras do not own many clothes. Hazaras ancestors were able to keep their ethnic identity, because their lower status prevented other groups from marrying them. Many Hazaras can be found in Hazarajat. Hazara children are not allowed to go to school and banned by the Pashtun because of their physical appearance and culture.

The teachings of Muhammad or the Hadith is what separates these two groups. They are two different types of Muslims, speak different languages and are two different cultures all together.
Mazāri Sharīf, meaning "Noble Shrine" (picture below) is the place of worship for Shi'a muslims;this, is the site of the tomb of Ali ibn Abi Talib, whom shi'a Muslims believe is the direct descendent of Muhammad. In 1998 that all changed when the Taliban, Fundamenalist Sunni Islamic group, invaded Mazari Sharif and killed many Shi'a muslims who were there to worship. Since then the Shi'a Muslims have tried to fight back but have failed in attempt.
